Fontplay was started while I was learning to use computers back in the 90's. When I found out how easy it was to put a bevel on text, and saw what could be done with all the other filters, I bought Photoshop and started playing. It was a dream come true for me, since I could neither draw or write very well, but computers and fonts seemed to be a bit of an equalizer.
Eventually I started posting my results to alt.binaries.fonts and realized it was a nice way to feature freeware fontmakers, and show people that nice things can be done with free fonts. After a couple years others decided to join in. Many have their own FontPlay sites.
About FontPlayer (a.k.a. Dennis Hill): By day I am a mild-mannered salesman. My only graphics training is a one semester class in Photoshop. I have mainly learned by doing, and seeing what real graphics people have done in regular magazines. Then I subscribed to a couple magazines that featured more graphics content (Print & Dynamic Graphics). Some of the ideas I have tried to copy. Almost always with completely different results.
Other hobbies: Eventually I bought a camera, so I could use some of my own photos, which when I put them on my site, it forced me to get my own domain because of bandwidth issues. When my arthritic thumb permits, I still play the flute (something I used to get paid to do).
Below are some subjects that I have written my opinions about, and other misc.
Stay tuned for more exciting commentary as the mood strikes.
